Food desert no more: A new Supermarket is Coming to a Familiar Spot in South Peoria

A local pastor and businessman is putting a grocery in South Peoria, heralding an end to the neighborhood’s years-long tenure as a food desert.

Harvest Supermarket is to open early next year in a vacant building at 210 S. Western Ave., formerly home to Save-A-Lot and Aldi. The new grocery, which will have 20 employees, is being helmed by Charles Brown, senior pastor at Victory Christian Church, 603 W. Nebraska Ave. He hopes the development — which will also include a food court, meal deliveries and a coffee shop — will spark spinoff commercial investment in the area.
